


Some history of the U.S.S SPRINGFIELD—–On August 15th came the news that President Truman had accepted the Japanese offer of Unconditional Surrender. The war for everyone including the SPRINGFIELD was over- but the SPRINGFIELD continued on with the difficult task of occupational duties as a Unit of the Occupational Forces.
On August 18th Commander Norman E. Blaisdell, USN, of Foxboro, Massachusetts relieved Commander Southwick as Executive Officer.
For nearly two weeks she patrolled off the coast of Japan on constant alert, and on August 27th steamed into Sagami Wan with the Occupation Forces for the surrender of the Japanese Empire. She was the first United States cruiser to anchor in Japanese Homeland waters.
